What is a dental bridge, and how can it help my smile?

A dental bridge is a fixed dental appliance that is used to correct your bite and replace a missing tooth. The bridge grasps onto the natural teeth that surround the hole as support, and fill in the gap where the missing tooth is, with a custom dental crown.

Our San Antonio TX dentist recommends replacing a missing tooth with a dental bridge, because having one or many missing teeth over a long period of time can negatively alter your facial structure, appearance, and smile. When a tooth or series of teeth no longer sits within the jaw, the jaw starts to shrink to fill in the holes left by the missing teeth. This eventually will cause your face to have a “caved-in” look, because the jaw will not be supporting your mouth in the same way.

By having your teeth replaced by Dr. Camacho, you can prevent the jawbone from shrinking, and repair your smile, while helping to prevent further oral health problems such as gum disease from becoming more likely to occur.

How do you place a dental bridge?

Placing a dental bridge is nowhere near as complicated as constructing a bridge over water, but in order to make sure your bridge lasts, seeing a dental professional like San Antonio TX dentist Dr. Camacho is very important if you don’t want your physical appearance and bite to be negatively altered.

The first step in the placement process is to have your teeth and bite evaluated by Dr. Camacho, so that we can be sure that alternative restorative dentistry options such as a dental implant are not more appropriate.

After it has been determined that a bridge is the best option, Dr. Camacho and his team will construct the dental crown that will eventually replace the tooth that has been lost and will be held up by the bridge. Once it has been completed, the bridge will be bonded and cemented into the neighboring teeth to provide a stable hold for the crown.
