Brushing and flossing on a regular basis is a great way to maintain healthy dental hygiene, but at-home care typically isn’t enough to prevent the buildup of bacteria such as calculus and tartar on the surface of your teeth. Often times pesky bacteria hides itself in areas that are hard to reach with an ordinary toothbrush and floss, making the dangers very real.
San Antonio dentist Dr. Edward Camacho of Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio stresses that regular visits, typically every six months, to a dental hygienist and dentist can prevent permanent damage and eliminate bacterial buildup.

What does a Teeth Cleaning and Dental Exam consist of?
Getting your teeth cleaned at your San Antonio dentist office can be a comfortable and luxurious experience. From the moment you step inside our beautiful, eco-friendly office, you will be amazed at how efficient and friendly our staff is, as they set you up for your dental cleaning and exam in one of our comfy dental chairs.
Once you have been seated, one of our talented dental hygienists will eliminate any plaque and tartar buildup that may have formed on the surface of your teeth and gumline. By removing any buildup, our hygienist helps to prevent the long-term hardening of bacteria on the teeth and gums which lead to cavities and other problems.
Following the removal of plaque and tartar, the hygienist will smooth out your tooth surface so that bacteria can’t hide in areas which are difficult to reach with a toothbrush.
To complete the teeth cleaning process, our San Antonio dental hygienist will floss and polish the surface of your teeth so that Dr. Camacho can come in and examine your teeth and gums for any abnormalities.
What happens if Dr. Camacho spots a tooth cavity?
If Dr. Camacho spots an area of a tooth that may have a cavity, he will suggest that you have it filled so that it does not grow or spread to other neighboring teeth or lead to gum disease. It is incredibly important to have tooth cavities filled as soon as possible, in order to prevent further damage.
Before your San Antonio dentist can fill the cavity area, he must first clean out the area and remove the infected part of the tooth. Dr. Camacho will then fill the hole with a sealing liquid that resembles the color of your natural tooth, hardening to prevent the spread of bacteria from re-entering the tooth.
